I’ve had a chance to take this jacket out on about 10 trips so far on resorts the Northeast US. Skiing in NE you face every type of condition imaginable, from rather nasty wind and cold to above freezing and ice/rain. This jacket has performed better than any ski jacket I’ve ever owned, in any condition I’ve worn it in. I’ve stayed dry and warm through powder days, mixed precip, stuck lifts, etc. Resort skiing is a pain in the way that layering like in the back country isn’t really feasible; no one likes riding on a lift with a pack. This jacket has pockets for everything, and filling them doesn’t bulk the jacket. It wears surprisingly slim, and the attention to detail is amazing- the zippers are like butter. The dump pocket is perfect for gloves, or keeping a nalgene or other bottle/beverage warm. I really can’t say enough about how happy I am with the purchase. I used to have to stop and head to locker/condo/car (etc) to strip or add layers at least once, sometimes twice a day. Now I can go a full day of skiing and only stop when I want some hot food.
I’m 5’9, 155lbs, athletic build. I bought a small with the intention of only wearing a base layer under it. I’ve been out as cold as -10F and been warm and toasty with a burly base layer, and as warm as 40F with a silk-weight. I know it’s a “big mountain” jacket, but honestly it performs so well and is so well made it’s become my “any mountain” jacket.
Firstly, a great looking jacket. Stylish, function, and discreet. I took this snowboarding in North East America this weekend, it was cold (-20c/-4f) and icy, or so my friends told me. I had no idea while wrapped in the Ragnarok. Buttery smooth material, great pocket placement and insulation. I wore this and the Heimdall Merino baselayer (a great bundle!) and I was as warm as if I’d stayed in bed. The fit is great, articulated enough to move well, but loose enough to layer underneath. I can’t wait to take it out again in Vermont next month. I returned a high end competitor’s jacket the moment I tried this on. Consider me converted. Folks at Jottnar have been nothing less than excellent. Can’t wait for my next piece of gear to arrive. Buy it, and you’re set for life.
